Sun Glare and Fading: Protecting Interiors Behind Period Glass

South and west-facing rooms in period houses take a real beating: bleached carpet in a band across the floor, faded curtain linings, and in some cases damage to artwork or antique timber. Glass choice makes a measurable difference, but only if you know which part of the spectrum is doing the damage.

UV is not the whole story

Ultraviolet causes a large share of photochemical fading, and a standard PVB laminate blocks the great majority of it. But visible light — particularly the blue end — also degrades dyes and pigments, and no clear glass stops that. Any supplier who tells you laminated glass eliminates fading is overselling. What it does is slow it substantially.

Where solar control makes sense

On a large west-facing picture window in a room used in the afternoon, a solar-control coating on the secondary pane cuts both glare and the heat build-up that makes the room unusable in summer. It carries a slight tint, so we always show a sample against the actual window before ordering.

The heritage case

In listed interiors with original textiles, papers or paintings, conservation advice generally combines a UV-filtering glazing layer with blinds used on the worst hours. Secondary glazing is the practical way to add the filtering layer because nothing is done to the historic window itself.

Frequently asked questions

It will slow it markedly by removing most of the UV, but visible light continues to contribute. Combining it with a blind on the worst two or three hours is the realistic answer.
