
Acoustic Laminated Glass Explained
Laminated glass is two panes bonded to a polyvinyl butyral interlayer. For acoustics the interlayer matters more than the extra millimetre of glass, because it is viscoelastic: it flexes and converts sound energy into a tiny amount of heat instead of passing it on.
Damping versus mass
Two mechanisms reduce noise through glass. Mass resists being moved by sound pressure, so heavier glass is generally quieter. Damping stops the pane ringing at its own resonant frequency, and that is what the interlayer provides. A 6.4 mm laminate outperforms a 6 mm monolithic pane of near-identical mass precisely because of the damping term.

6.4 mm vs 6.8 mm — what the extra buys
6.4 mm uses a standard 0.38 mm interlayer; 6.8 mm uses a 0.76 mm acoustic-grade interlayer. The thicker, softer interlayer pushes the coincidence dip out of the range that carries most road and rail energy. On a busy A-road we default to 6.8 mm. On a quiet street where the driver is thermal rather than acoustic, 6.4 mm or even 4 mm float is honestly enough.
Mismatch the panes deliberately
Every pane has a frequency at which it becomes acoustically transparent. If your primary and secondary panes are the same thickness those weak points line up and you get a hole in the performance. Keeping the original 4 mm and specifying 6.8 mm room-side offsets the two dips so one covers the other.
The secondary benefits nobody mentions
Laminated glass holds together when broken, which is why it is the security specification too, and the interlayer blocks the great majority of UV, which slows fading of furnishings. You buy it for noise and get both of those free.
Frequently asked questions
