DIY vs Professional Secondary Glazing Installation

DIY secondary glazing is a legitimate option and we would rather explain where it works than pretend it never does. The determining factor is almost always whether your openings are square.

Where DIY genuinely works

Square, modern openings with a flat reveal and easy access. A small landing window, a spare bedroom, a garage or a workshop. If the target is a modest thermal improvement and reduced draught rather than a measured acoustic result, a competent DIY kit will deliver it at a fraction of the cost.

  • Square, modern openings
  • Small windows at accessible height
  • Thermal and draught goals rather than acoustic targets

The three things that usually go wrong

First, out-of-square openings — a period reveal is rarely square, and a rectangular kit frame in a trapezoid opening leaves a wedge-shaped gap that destroys the seal. Second, seal compression: a frame that is fixed but not evenly packed seals along part of its length only, and partial sealing gives a fraction of the acoustic benefit. Third, glass weight — 6.8 mm laminated in a large panel is heavy, awkward and genuinely dangerous to handle alone at height.

When professional is cheaper overall

Any period property with out-of-square reveals. Any acoustic target you actually need to hit. Anything above ground-floor height. Anything on a listed building, where a poorly executed install can become a fabric issue. And any job where a failed DIY attempt means buying the materials twice.

The middle ground

Some owners do the straightforward rear openings themselves and have us do the front elevation, the bay and the awkward heights. That is a sensible split and we are happy to quote for part of a house.

Frequently asked questions

We manufacture to templated dimensions taken by us, because we cannot warrant a unit made to someone else's measurements. If you want supply-only, we will discuss it but the warranty position changes.
