Can You Still Open the Original Window?

A horizontal slider gives access by sliding a panel clear, and the panels lift out of the track by hand for full access. A vertical slider works the same way and the sashes tilt in. A hinged casement opens the whole way in one movement, which is the easiest option of all. A lift out panel comes away on turn catches, giving total access but needing somewhere to put the panel down. A fixed panel is the only system that needs an installer to remove.

Cleaning the cavity

Dust finds its way into the gap between the two windows at a rate that depends on how leaky the original window is. Once or twice a year, open or remove the secondary panel, wipe both inner faces and vacuum the track or sill. That is the whole maintenance routine for most installations, alongside a wipe of the gaskets and a drop of oil on any moving ironmongery.

Shutters, blinds and curtain poles

Working shutters, existing blinds and poles are measured at survey and the frame position is set so they still work. Occasionally a blind has to be refitted slightly forward, and occasionally a shutter needs the frame set deeper into the box. What should never happen is an installation that traps a shutter permanently open, and it is worth confirming that point in writing before ordering.

Escape windows and emergencies

Any window designated as an escape route keeps a system that opens from the inside without a key, normally a hinged casement. Lift out and fixed panels are not fitted over escape windows. If you are unsure which of your windows counts, we identify them at survey and specify accordingly, and the same rule applies in rented and commercial property.
