
Acrylic vs Glass Secondary Glazing
Acrylic and polycarbonate panels weigh less and cost less than glass. Those two facts explain both where they are useful and why we specify glass for almost every permanent installation.
Density decides the acoustics
Sound reduction through a panel tracks its mass per square metre. Acrylic is about 1.19 g/cm³ against roughly 2.5 for glass, so a 4 mm acrylic sheet has less than half the acoustic mass of 4 mm glass and nothing like the damping of a laminate. If noise is the reason you are buying, acrylic will disappoint you.

Optical life
New acrylic is optically excellent. Three winters of cleaning later it carries a haze of fine scratches, and prolonged UV slowly yellows the cheaper grades. Glass cleans indefinitely without degrading. In a room you look out of every day this becomes the thing you notice.
Where acrylic is the right call
Very large fixed panels in a building where weight is a structural concern, high-level windows in a school or gym where impact safety outweighs optics, and temporary or seasonal panels. Polycarbonate in particular is close to unbreakable and has a real role in vandal-prone commercial settings.
