Secondary Glazing vs Triple Glazing for Noise

Triple glazing sounds like it should be the ultimate answer to noise. Three panes must beat two. In acoustics it does not work that way, and understanding why will save you a great deal of money on a noisy road.

Why more panes does not mean less noise

Acoustic performance depends on mass, damping and separation. Triple glazing adds a third pane but usually splits the same overall unit thickness into two narrower cavities, often 12mm to 16mm each. Narrow cavities couple the panes together through the trapped gas, so the assembly behaves closer to one stiff element than three independent ones. Some triple glazed units actually measure slightly worse than a well specified double glazed unit with asymmetric panes.

The coincidence dip

Every pane of glass has a frequency at which it becomes acoustically transparent, called the coincidence frequency, and it depends on thickness. If two or three panes in an assembly are the same thickness, their dips line up and the whole unit has a weak band, often in the range where traffic noise is most audible. Good acoustic design deliberately mismatches thicknesses. Secondary glazing does this almost by default, because your original 3mm or 4mm glass is nothing like a 6.8mm acoustic laminate.

Where secondary glazing wins

Separation. A secondary system typically gives 100mm to 200mm between the existing glass and the new pane. That is five to fifteen times the cavity of a triple glazed unit, and separation is the variable with the steepest effect on low and mid frequency transmission, which is exactly where road, rail and aircraft noise lives.

Where triple glazing wins

Heat. Triple glazing is a thermal product first and it is very good at that job, particularly on a new build or a deep retrofit aiming at low energy standards. If your priority is U value on a modern airtight house, triple glazing is a reasonable buy. If your priority is sleeping through the 6am bin lorry, it is not the tool for the job.

What the specialists actually specify

Where a planning condition sets an internal noise limit, acoustic consultants routinely specify secondary glazing with a stated cavity and a stated laminated glass, rather than triple glazing. That is not tradition, it is because the tested performance figures support it, and because secondary glazing can be tuned to the specific problem by adjusting cavity and glass independently.

The combination

On genuinely severe sites, a main line railway boundary or a flight path, the strongest option is a good sealed unit in the primary window plus secondary glazing behind it. You get the thermal performance of the modern unit and the decoupling of the deep cavity. It costs more than either alone, and on the worst sites it is the only thing that produces a room people describe as quiet.

Write down your primary goal in one sentence. If the sentence contains the word cold, triple glazing deserves consideration. If it contains the word noise, cavity depth is your lever and secondary glazing gives you far more of it per pound.
